Mother of Pearl (nacre) is the iridescent material from inside mollusk shells, primarily large Australian oysters. It features brilliant reflective colors and nearly translucent 3D appearance. Cut into shapes and admired for natural beauty. **Fordele:** Stunning iridescent appearance, naturally water resistant, unique organic beauty, timeless elegance, natural variations create uniqueness **Ulemper:** Fragile and brittle, very slippery when smooth, difficult to work, expensive, cracks easily, purely decorative
Properties
✓ Pros
• Good water resistance
✗ Cons
• Lower durability, may wear over time
Working Notes
Cutting: Very brittle - score and snap or use diamond wheel. Fragile material breaks easily. Eye and respiratory protection essential. Sanding: Sand carefully with fine grits only (400+). Material is thin and can break. Wet sand to control dust.
Finishing Notes
Polishes to brilliant luster. Natural iridescence is enhanced by smooth finish. Handle carefully during buffing.
⚠️ Special Considerations
Best used as inlay rather than full handle due to fragility. Slippery surface provides no grip. Purely aesthetic material.
