There's a lot to keep track of when you make a knife. Here's the short version of how these tools fit together — expand any step to read more.
1. Choose your steel
Steel isn't just steel. Some hold an edge for a long time, others are easy to sharpen or resist rust — and there's always a trade-off. Use the Steel Selector to find a steel that fits what the knife is for, and the Steel Browser to compare them in detail.
2. Shape and grind the blade
The grind gives the blade its geometry — and with it, how well it cuts. The Grinding Calculator gives you the exact angles and measurements for the grind you want, and the Speed Calculator helps you keep a belt speed that won't overheat the steel.
3. Harden and temper
Heat treatment is what turns the steel into a knife. Get the temperature wrong and the blade ends up too soft or too brittle. Heat Treatment gives you a tailored schedule for your exact steel — hardening temperature, quench, and tempering with the hardness you can expect.
