Description
Stingray leather, called shagreen or galuchat, is covered in calcium beads made of dentine and enamel - the same material as teeth. This makes it the hardest leather known. High quality stingray skin is traditional on Japanese swords and European daggers. **Fordele:** Hardest leather available, exceptional grip texture, highly water resistant, incredibly durable, exotic appearance, traditional material **Ulemper:** Very expensive, difficult to work due to hardness, limited availability, requires special tools, bead surface hard to shape
Properties
✓ Pros
• Good workability • Good water resistance • Highly durable and long-lasting
✗ Cons
• Requires proper care and maintenance
Working Notes
Cutting: Extremely hard - use sharp leather shears or heavy scissors. Bead surface dulls blades quickly. Consider pre-cut pieces. Sanding: Calcium beads resist sanding. Light sanding of backing only. Natural texture is the feature.
Finishing Notes
Natural surface needs minimal finishing. Can be dyed various colors. Seal backing to prevent moisture absorption.
⚠️ Special Considerations
Natural anti-slip properties superior to any other leather. Traditional choice for handles where slipperiness is dangerous.
