Description
Deer antler is a sustainable material shed annually by bucks after the rut. It's lightweight yet incredibly strong with natural texture that enhances grip. Antler is actual bone structure, warmer and more tactile than synthetic materials with good grip even when wet. **Fordele:** Sustainable (naturally shed), lightweight and strong, excellent natural grip, warm to touch, unique appearance, North American sourced **Ulemper:** Contains porous pith in center, natural variations in quality, can crack if not properly sealed, limited to antler shape
Properties
✓ Pros
• Good workability • Good water resistance
✗ Cons
• Requires proper care and maintenance
Working Notes
Cutting: Dense outer layer cuts well, pith is softer. Use sharp tools for clean cuts. Antler dust requires respiratory protection. Sanding: Outer layer sands smoothly 220-600 grit. Natural texture often preserved. Crown sections need careful handling.
Finishing Notes
Oil to enhance natural color. Can be sealed or left natural. Wax provides protection. Natural texture is often the finish.
⚠️ Special Considerations
Pith content varies by antler section. Outer layers are denser. Each antler unique in color, texture, and character.
